As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, one of the most common questions I get from couples before their pre-wedding photo session is, “What should we wear?” And I totally get it—you’re about to have your photo taken (maybe professionally for the first time together), and naturally, you want to look and feel your best. The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.
I’ve photographed couples in all kinds of weather, and in nature and city locations. After a decade of experience, I’ve picked up some go-to advice that helps couples feel confident, relaxed, and truly like themselves in front of the camera. So here’s my honest, no-fuss guide.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. If you live in jeans and boots, let that shine through! If you’ve got a flowy dress that you love, now’s a great time to wear it. You want your engagement photos to reflect your personality and relationship, not a Pinterest version of yourselves that doesn’t feel quite right.
That said, there’s a sweet spot between casual and polished. Think: the best version of your everyday style.
One big reason to do a pre-wedding photo session is to practice what it’s like to be in front of the camera so that’s one less thing to stress about on the wedding day itself.
Gone are the days of wearing identical white shirts and jeans (thankfully). Instead, try coordinating your outfits in terms of color palette and vibe. If one of you is going for something a bit more dressy, it’s good for the other to match that general tone.
When it comes to colours, soft neutrals, earthy tones, and gentle pastels tend to photograph beautifully – especially against classic Edinburgh backdrops like Arthur’s Seat, the Old Town, or a moody coastal spot near Portobello. Avoid super bright neons or bold logos that might pull focus away from your connection. I always suggest couples avoid wearing bright red, for example.
And it seems obvious, but still worth mentioning – make sure your clothes are ironed. Too many wrinkles will appear in the final result and you don’t want to look rumpled in all your photos.
Are we shooting in a scenic grassy field outside the city? Wandering through the cobbled streets of the Royal Mile? Strolling along the leafy Water of Leith? Let the setting guide your choices. Soft fabrics that move well in the wind (hello, Edinburgh breezes!) look stunning in outdoor locations. And layers—always layers! They give you visual versatility as well as warmth. The weather here is charmingly unpredictable, so having a jacket, scarf, or jumper on hand is always a good shout. If we’re doing a lot of walking, choose comfortable shoes or bring along a pair of trainers.
If you’re torn between two outfits, bring both! A quick change gives your Edinburgh pre-wedding photos some variety and a whole new feel. I usually recommend one casual look and one a little more elevated – great for save-the-dates or your wedding website. Be aware though that not everywhere has public toilets so this only works in a location where there’s somewhere you go to can change outfits.
If you ever want help choosing outfits, I’m always happy to give a second opinion. I love the work I do and it’s such a joy for me to help couples feel your best at this important and special moment in your lives. As your Edinburgh wedding photographer, I’m here to help every step of the way.
I also offer individual couples sessions for people who just want some fun photos together, even if you are already married or are just visiting Edinburgh on holiday.
